How to Get Your Home Ready for Spring

George Chowanec • Mar 31, 2014

Spring has sprung, according to the calendar, anyway. While Mother Nature works on getting the temperature stabilized for April, many of us are eager to throw open the windows and start on our spring cleaning! If you aren’t quite sure where to start, it might be helpful to consider some bigger projects that you can begin while waiting for the warm, sunny days of spring to arrive. Here are a few to get you started:

Put away your winter clothing.

You’re probably still wearing some of your winter wear, but you will be able to pack away the heaviest items soon. Transitioning your wardrobe can be one of the less-fun tasks that we take on every year, but most homeowners do find that it needs to be done. Some ways that you can avoid unpleasant surprises, such as moth-eaten wool and mildew, include cleaning your items properly and storing them in appropriate containers. On Housewife How-Tos, you can find more great tips on storing your winter clothing. This task will probably take you a few hours, and more if you factor in time for cleaning and mending. It might be best to do it over the course of a weekend.

Scrub out your appliances.

Take everything out of the refrigerator and give it a good wash-down. Take out the shelves, scrub out the rubber gaskets and vacuum the coils in the back before plugging it back in and putting away your food. Do the same with your stove: Pull it out away from the wall and wash all of its surfaces. One appliance that you might not remember to clean often is the washing machine. If you take a good look in your machine, you will likely find a buildup of grime and dirt. Yuck! Here is a good tutorial on how to clean your top-loading washing machine.

Get the dust out.

Ahh, dusting. You probably either love it or hate it. No matter how you feel, you do have to admit that it’s satisfying to see your shiny, dust-free surfaces. Grab your dust cloths, the vacuum cleaner and the furniture spray and get to work. Don’t forget the ceiling fans, the ceilings themselves if they’re textured, and the back of all of your furniture. If you have children, let them dust the baseboards with a damp cloth; they’re lower to the ground than you are, after all. HGTV’s website has some good advice on how to keep your dust levels down. Check them out and see if you’re doing all of them!

Once your winter clothes are put away, your appliances are as clean as the day you bought them, and dust has been banished, you will feel as though you’ve made a big dent in your spring cleaning. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and you will be able to spend some hard-earned time enjoying the great outdoors and warm, spring-like temperatures!
