Tips to Make Your Custom Closet Work for You

George Chowanec • Jun 20, 2019

Once your custom closet is installed and ready to go, you might have some anxiety over how you will make sure that it works for you. We have provided you with the tools needed to stay organized in your bedroom, so all that’s left to do is put your items away and keep everything in good shape. While this sounds super simple in theory, the fact is that you will need to develop some good habits to make your custom closet work for you. Here are some tips on getting the most out of your new storage system.

Take Care of Your Closet and Your Clothing

First, keep in mind that your custom closet has been designed to be easy to care for and to help you take good care of your clothes. There is no hard work involved: Wipe down the components once in a while and be careful with your clothing. Those are the two main rules for keeping your belongings in great shape.

Impeccable Closets in North Carolina wrote a great article on this called How Do You Care for a Custom Closet? Check it out and follow their tips for making sure the closet itself is kept clean and that your clothing is treated properly to prolong its life.

Choose Your Clothing the Night Before

In the morning, it’s easy to become harried and hurried. You have limited time before you have to get the kids off to school or get yourself off for work, and the last thing you need to be dealing with early in the morning is stress. Now that your clothing is nicely organized in your closet, take a few minutes each evening to choose what you are going to wear the next day. There should be no rummaging because you have enough room to see everything that you have.

Take out the items you plan to wear, including your accessories, and look them over carefully. Are there stains or frayed edges that need to be addressed? Do you know where the shoes that go with that outfit are? Get them out, too. Choose accessories: Which tie, scarf, necklace, or earrings do you want to wear? You can use your valet rod to hang all of these items; another option is to hang them from a hook in your bathroom. Imagine how much more smoothly your morning will be now that you know what you are going to wear and have already checked to be sure it is in excellent condition.

Get Into a Good Laundry Routine

One reason your closet might have been messy before was that you didn’t have a great routine when it came to washing, drying, and hanging up your laundry. Now that you have enough space for all of your items, it’s time to get this part of your life under control. First, if your laundry room is a disaster, consider investing in a custom laundry room. If you aren’t ready to take that step, do what you can to neaten up the area.

Next, decide what works best for you when it comes to laundry. Do you prefer to do it all in one day, such as on a Saturday? Or would you rather put a load in to wash every morning? Either way, it is important to keep the process going and not to let clean laundry sit in the washer or dryer; that is how wrinkles set in. By staying on top of your laundry processes, you can reduce the amount of time you spend ironing.

Once your clothes are dry, take them out of the dryer as soon as you can, preferably while they are still warm. Fold or hang what can be put away and iron what needs to be ironed. Then hang those items up, too. When you address laundry in this way, no matter how frequently you do it, you won’t have the problem of seeing wrinkled clothing in your closet, which makes the space look messy and can be discouraging.

Don’t Be Afraid to Change Things Up

When you had your free in-home consultation, your closet designer created a closet system that would work for you. And chances are excellent that it did work for you! But as we go through the years, sometimes things change. You might have gained or lost a spouse. Perhaps you have switched from wearing mostly separates to wearing mostly dresses (or vice versa). Maybe you have a new job that has you wearing more casual or more formal clothing. It’s even possible that you decided to start collecting purses, shoes, or neckties. When your belongings change, it is possible that your closet needs to change. Adding or taking away a closet accessory or two is easy and will allow you to continue using your closet and making the most of it.
