Small Changes That Can Have a Big Impact on Your Custom Closet System

Sometimes the problem isn’t that your whole closet is unacceptable – just a small change or two could reshape your custom closet from cluttered to organized or from something that you really dislike into something that you love. You would be surprised by how much small changes can impact your custom closet system and turn it into a more useful and beautiful space. The question is which small changes give you the most bang for your buck?

  • Hanging Rods: Placement and Number
  • Adjustable Shelves to Meet Changing Needs
  • Closet Door Options For Access
  • Hardware Choices to Add That Special Something

Take a look at some simple changes that can make your custom closet system amazing.

Hanging Rods: Placement and Number

Do you still have one hanging rod across the width of your reach-in closet or three along the walls of your walk-in closet? Maybe you need more than you have, or perhaps you need to consider a different configuration. People get so used to the standard closet design that they don’t immediately think of changing the hanging rods, but it turns out that you have a lot of options.

You could double hang clothes by positioning one rod higher up and one below it for hanging separately. Two smaller rods on the sides of the closet could offer more flexibility than one long one running the width of the closet. You may want to create different sections in the closet with different hanging rods. Adjustable rods might be an advantage if you need different closet configurations in different seasons. Just changing your hanging rods could change a lot about your closet overall.

Adjustable Shelves to Meet Changing Needs

Speaking of adjustability, adjustable shelves can do a lot to improve your closet space. They give you the ability to make changes as they come up without needing to revamp your whole closet. These are great for kids’ closets when you want the closet to be able to grow with the child, and they can work well for adult closets too.

Consider the seasonal changes you make to your closet. Many winter clothes are large and heavy. Sweatshirts are best folded and stacked on a shelf anyway – hanging stretches them out and they can take up too much room in drawers. Things like athletic pants or leggings can be folded and put on a shelf, too. Maybe during the winter months, it’s better to have those shelves with warm clothes lowered so that your wardrobe is within easy reach. During the warmer months, when your clothes are lighter and will fit on hanging rods and in drawers more easily, you might prefer those shelves to be placed higher and use them for other storage.

Closet Door Options For Access

The closet door you have now isn’t your only option, and it may not be your best option either. Farm Food Family compares different kinds of closet doors and their pros and cons. If you have a smaller custom closet in a small space, an accordion door might be the right choice for you – it gives you full access to the closet without taking up very much space. A pocket closet door is another space-saving option.

On the other hand, if you have plenty of room to work with, you may want doors that open out wide to display everything in your closet. French doors are a classic, elegant look, especially when the doors contain gorgeous glass panels. You can also convert most bifold, bypass, or sliding closet doors into mirrored doors. This is not only a gorgeous look, but it also saves space inside the closet because you won’t need to install a mirror inside. A new closet door could be the simple upgrade that makes your closet space perfect.

Hardware Choices to Add That Special Something

Maybe there are no organizational or functional tools you need to add to your custom closet, but you want to upgrade the closet’s look and feel. If so, consider the hardware. Handles and hinges come in a variety of colors and styles. Maybe an upgrade from aluminum to gold adds a more polished look or changing from nickel to brass makes the closet look more modern.

It’s easy to overlook things like handles, hinges, and knobs, but changing those small features could make a very big difference in how your closet looks. Changing out hardware is also relatively inexpensive and simple, so you can do it without a big time or monetary commitment.

Conclusion

Sometimes it’s just one closet feature that needs work to make your closet more functional and beautiful. Consider your hanging rods, shelves, closet door, and hardware. These are all small changes that can have large impacts on your closet’s function and appearance.
