The laundry room , by design, is generally a small area of the home that is out of the way of the main living areas. While many people do not relish the idea of spending any extra time in their laundry rooms, getting your Asbury Park laundry room organized will make it easier to get the job done and can make it more pleasant to wash, dry, and fold your laundry. Read on to learn some of our best tips on organizing a small laundry room.

Evaluate What You Are Storing in the Laundry Room

First and foremost, if you have a small laundry room, it’s wise to consider whether you need everything you are storing in the space. Many times, the laundry room becomes a catchall for seasonal decorations, extra light bulbs and batteries, and other items that might be better stored somewhere else. If you have the extra space, then it makes sense to use it for these types of items, but if space is tight, you might want to look elsewhere for additional storage space.

The bare essentials that you should have in your laundry room are really the washer and dryer (of course!), a place to store baskets or a hamper full of dirty laundry, laundry aids (detergent, pre-treatment, dryer sheets), and a place to process clean laundry before you bring it into the appropriate bedrooms. Some people prefer to fold or iron laundry outside of the laundry room , which is fine if that’s what you want. If you would like to process your clean laundry in the laundry room, your laundry room designer can help you with solutions.

Add Hanging Rods

Hanging rods can be mounted high up on the wall or even suspended from the ceiling (if your ceiling is low enough) to maximize your vertical space without taking up horizontal real estate. These can be used for a variety of things:

  • Hanging clean clothes before they go in the closets
  • Hanging clean clothes up to dry
  • Hanging clean clothes before or after ironing
  • Hanging clothing that needs to be mended
  • Hanging clothing that has been stain-treated
  • Hanging clothes that need to be hand-washed
  • Hanging your bag of clothespins or other small items
  • Storing extra hangers

Consider double-hanging your rods with the top one about three feet above the bottom one to double the amount of clothing that you can hang at once.

Consider Laundry Room Cabinets and Shelves

Your small laundry room might already have a shelf running across the top of it. In many laundry rooms, this is the only storage available! Adding laundry room cabinets and shelving will give you more space to store items without taking up precious floor space.

Our cabinets and shelves are made from wood and coated in melamine, which is moisture-resistant. You can simply wipe them off to keep them dust-free, which is an advantage over the wire shelving that often comes in laundry rooms. They are also wall-mounted, which adds to the stability of shelves and makes it simple to clean underneath.

Take Advantage of Your Wall Space

One way that you can organize a small laundry room is to take advantage of the wall space that you have. A pull-down ironing board or folding table gives you the space you need to prepare clothes to go into your closet. Best of all, these sit against the wall won’t take up space when they are not being used.

A variety of hooks or a slatwall system can also add wall-based storage to your small laundry room. The key to keeping it organized is to have a space for each item that you want to store in the room. With a slatwall system, you will have a versatile system for hanging small bins, hooks, and other accessories to help you keep small items at your fingertips but out of the way. Hooks can also hold your broom, mop, dustpan, and other cleaning essentials if you choose to store them in the laundry room.
