Make Home Improvements This Spring

George Chowanec • May 01, 2013

Spring is a traditional time for making home improvements. From spring cleaning to putting a new coat of paint on the house or having a new roof put on, many homeowners, as well as home improvement specialists, are busy in the months between the cold winter and the hot summer. In most of the country, this is the time when the windows can be left open during the day, letting the breeze blow out the dust of winter and the smell of cleaning and construction supplies. If you are considering having home improvements done this spring but aren’t sure where to start, here are some ideas:

If you don’t have much money to invest, do something that will make a big impact without costing you a lot

Some examples might be giving the house a thorough cleaning, painting a room with a new color or an accent wall, or simply rearranging rooms and furniture. Outdoors, you could re-mulch the front garden, pull weeds and trim and edge the lawn. All of these can make things seem shiny and new without you actually having to spend a lot of money. If you are also short on time, try inviting some friends over for a cleaning or painting party; if you supply them with pizza or other refreshments and promise to return the favor sometime soon, your chores will get done quickly, and you’ll have fun, too!

Finish up a few projects that you have been putting off

Most homeowners have them: Maybe you put down flooring but never installed the molding. Or perhaps you have drawers and cabinets in the kitchen that need to be tightened. You may have had professional work done, such as plumbing, that left a damaged area on a wall or in the tile floor that needs to be repaired. One Friday afternoon on your way home from work, pick up the supplies that you’ll need, and vow to get the project completed on Saturday morning. It’s amazing what a difference doing these simple and neglected chores can make.

Do something that will help your overall organization strategy

Having a professional organization expert spend some time in your home can really help you to change some of your routines. Products like custom closets, a newly organized home office or a custom garage can give you a place to store the belongings that are making clutter in the rest of your home. Not only will these types of services help you now, but they’ll help later, as well, when it’s time to sell your house; in many cases, custom closets and other organization systems can add value to your home and may even prevent it from languishing on the market for months or years.

You have a couple of months before the dog days of summer set in over much of the United States, making spring the ideal time to decide on and complete a few home improvement projects. Whether you’re handling it on your own or calling in an expert, like a custom closet company, you’ll appreciate the difference that some basic upgrades will make in the way you feel about your home.
