How to Save Money on Custom Closets

George Chowanec • Aug 09, 2013

One of the questions that’s asked by homeowners who are considering investing in custom closetsis about cost: While a professionally designed and installed organization system might be just what we need, the fact is that if it’s not affordable, then it isn’t possible. The truth is that custom closet systems vary tremendously in price. When you talk to your closet designer, he or she will be able to advise you on ways to save money on your design. In the meantime, here are some tips:

Remember that accessories drive up the price

Closet accessoriesare important in the sense that they help you to keep your smaller items, such as scarves, belts, ties, shoes and jewelry, organized. The tradeoff is that they tend to raise the price of your custom closet. Talk to your closet designer about what you want and need, and be willing to make concessions based on price if that is important to you.

Some materials are more pricey than others

Wood is often more pricey than wire, and depending on what type of moldings and hardware you want, you might raise the price of your closets. While it might not matter too much to you if it’s only something cosmetic, be aware that there are advantages to choosing wood over wire, including ease of installation, a better fit, and a more sturdy overall product.

Larger closets are more expensive than smaller closets

While a master bedroom walk-in closet might cost you several thousand dollars, a smaller closet might only cost several hundred. Obviously you can’t do anything about the size of your bedroom closet! However, if you have a quote for your master closet, don’t automatically assume that all of the closets in the home will be that expensive. Size matters, and it’s very likely that your walk-in will be the most pricey closet in the house.

Don’t be afraid to tell your closet professional your budget

Remember that your designer knows how to build closets for any situation, including a slightly lower budget. Tell him or her the amount of money that you can spend, and ask for some suggestions. It is possible that installing fewer drawers or a different configuration of clothing rods will make the difference in price that you need.

Keep in mind the financial benefits that you may be getting from your closets

If, for example, you are planning on putting your home on the market in the near or distant future, your custom closets might raise the value of your home or make it easier to sell. Another plus in this category is that clothing and shoes that are well cared for tend to last longer than items that are crushed or allowed to fall to the floor. If your closet system eliminates these problems, you may offset part of the cost of the closet with lower clothing costs over time.

In general, it’s possible to save money on custom closets by letting your professional know what you can spend, and taking into considerations all of the suggestions above. Remembering that it’s an investment in your home can help you make the decision that is right for you.
