How To Hire A Closet Design Company and Not Get Ripped Off

George Chowanec • May 11, 2015

When it comes time for your family to have a new closet designed, the first thing you’re going to do is schedule a home consultation. Seems simple enough, right? But how will you know in this early stage of the process if you’re hiring an inadequate closet designer? Here’s a list of a few things that should make you think twice before hiring a designer.

What kind of first impression did they make?

First things first here. Is the consultant well presented? Do they show respect for your home? Are they organi zed with their presentation? If they don’t pass this test, you should already be asking yourself if they’re the right person for the job.

Do they have a clear understanding of your needs?

If you’re looking for a new closet design, you should be the one talking, to explain your needs. At
this point the consultant should be listening to get an understanding of the closet. If they’re the one doing all the talking, how will they know what you need? Once you’ve explained your closet, then the consultant should have a list of questions to get a better idea of your needs.

Is the consultant able to handle all of your questions?

During this consultation, you’re going to have a list of questions for the closet design consultant. Ifhe’s not able to answer them himself, do you really feel like he’s adequate to do the job? Does he have to call someone else to get you answers? Does he seem knowledgeable about hisanswers? If not, why would you trust him with your closet design?

Computer Generated Custom Closet Design

Did the closet consultant provide a computer generated design?

This one is important, to make sure that your closet design is accurate. If the consultant is still hand-drawing a closet design, this should be a red flag. There are computer programs now that allow you to see the design in 3D, rotate, and fill the space with clothing, so that you have a better understanding of your design. Computer generated designs are much more accurate and your closet design should be able to provide this type of design.

What is the overall competence of the closet consultant?

supplying that is quality as well. Do they have any certifications? Do they seem knowledgeable? Do they have a business license? How much experience do they have? These are all questions that you should be thinking of when determining if this consultant is a good fit to design your closet.
