How Much Does a Custom Closet Cost and Closet Discounts

George Chowanec • Apr 15, 2015

We all want a discount don’t we?  We go to a large department store toward the end of a season and see 50% off of a purchase we think it’s an amazing deal and we must buy it.

How does this relate to custom closetdiscounts? How much does a custom closet cost?

Reputable NJ custom closet companies will mark down a closet system a nominal amount which equates to about 20% on a large job.   The markdown is related to the savings of mobilizing, driving and the reduced overhead costs with one large job.  It is common that the discount point occurs at about $1,000.  A closet sale less than $1,000 cannot be discounted as there are limited margins in the price to reduce.  So how are closet companies discounting 30% or 40%?  Easy, mark up the closet and reduce it to get to that discounted final price.

For example, your closet design is worth $2000.  If a closet company has a bottom line sales price of $2,000 in order to make money, did you get a better deal at $2,850 less 30% what about $3,335 less 40%?  All three yield the same final price of $2,000, for a closet that is truly valued at $2,000.  So it is just a sneaky underhanded way to make you think you received a large discount.  Don’t succumb to a company playing you for a fool!  It should make you wonder.

Another point to consider is quality of product.  Is the material being used of cheap quality?  How does Walmart sell a plastic pitcher of same size for 30% – 50% less than Tupperware?  Simple, Tupperware built first with quality top of mind.  Tupperware was made to last and does not spill even when dropped full of liquid.    Walmart’s container was built to be affordable for the masses first and preventing a spill by dropping the container was never part of the intended design.

Remember Lumber Liquidators?  They offer up to 65% off on flooring.  To increase their bottom line, they sourced the flooring from China.  However, the wood contained Formaldehyde which is a cancer causing chemical.   When you invest in something for your home invest in something that will last in quality and service.

What happens if a company discounts 20% then when you still say NO they take another 20% off?  Or, if you sign right now I will take another 20% off?  All sales tricks to get you to sign on the bottom line for something that was not worth the original investment from the start. As a consumer why invest in something that the seller does not value?  If you went for a job interview and the salary was $50,000 would you say to the interviewer “If you hire me right now I will take $25,000?”  Of course not.  You are an asset with value.

If you are looking to reduce your investment call the closet company back and discuss the options.  There are many ways to reduce the investment in your original design.  If the cost of one company is higher than another the difference is usually in the details.  There are so many things that can drive the investment:

  •          Component quality & quantity
  •          Shelving costs more than hanging
  •          Drawers cost more than shelving
  •          The list goes on and on
