How Can A Custom Closet Give Me More Space?

George Chowanec • Dec 11, 2012

How can a custom closet organization system free up more space in my home?

It seems obvious that a professionally-installed closet systemwill make the closet itself more roomy, as everything will be stored more efficiently and effectively. How, though, do the benefits extend outside of the immediate area of the actual closet? It can be difficult to imagine, but your newly organized closets will impact the rest of the home.

Here are a few of the ways that this works:

Getting into the habit of keeping one space organized tends to get you into the habit of keeping everything else organized as well. Have you ever heard of The Flylady? She is a home organization expert who caters to the people she calls “sidetracked home executives,” a.k.a. people who are simply too distracted by everything else going on in their lives to keep their homes neat and clean. She’s helped millions gain control of their homes and lives.

The first step that she has all “flybabies” (people new to her system) complete is to clean out and shine their sink.

A clean, gleaming sink is often the impetus that her clients need in order to then clean the counters, wipe down the appliances and mop the floor. Having one well-organized space in your home will inspire you to allow that tidiness to expand into the master bedroom, kids’ bedrooms and beyond. When your home is well-organized, you suddenly end up with more space than you ever knew you had!

A custom closet allows you to store items that previously had no convenient place to live.

Consider your seasonal decorations, for example. Are these tucked away in the corner of the garage or basement where they’re at risk of being damaged by moisture or insects? Or maybe they’re on a high shelf somewhere, and getting them down requires the use of a ladder. This process forces you to move other items out of the way, where they may stay, misplaced, until the holiday season is over.

If you have extra shelving in your walk-in closet, however, the decorations are easy to reach, plus they’re protected from the elements. This is, of course, only an example; your problem items might be outgrown clothing, sports equipment or craft supplies. Instead of having piles placed randomly in concealed areas, you can have your items organized in one space. Further, this opens up the space that the items had been taking up, and allows you to use those spots more efficiently.

Remember that custom closets are, as the name implies, customized to you and your lifestyle.

While your neighbor might have an impressive shoe collection requiring the use of a large shoe rack, you might have fewer shoes and more purses. Your husband might work in an office and have dozens of neckties; your neighbor’s husband might work on a construction site and wear heavy jackets and workboots.

A closet system bought in a box isn’t going to be able to cater to these differences, and might end up costing you space; what are you going to do with a huge shoe rack if your shoe collection is small? The key to saving space is to have a professional closet designer come in and take a look at what you need to store, then design your closet around those parameters. This is what any reputable custom closet company will do for you.
