Home Organization Projects For Long Weekends

George Chowanec • May 24, 2013

Whenever a long weekend comes up, most of us are happy to have an extra day off to relax, to travel, and maybe to catch up on some sleep. One of the great things about a long weekend is that even if you spend a couple of days working on home improvement or home organization projects, you will still have a whole day left to do what you want! With that in mind, here are some excellent projects that you can finish over the course of a weekend, long or not. It might seem like a lot of work to get them completed, but once they are done, you’ll be able to enjoy all of your hard work in the coming weeks and months.

Replace Flooring in a Room

Replacing the floors is one of those jobs that some people prefer to leave to the experts. With today’s products available, you might very well be able to update a room by putting in new flooring all on your own. It is best if you have a helper, of course. If the room is currently carpeted, simply start tearing it up along one side, being sure to carefully remove the carpet tacks along the edges. Do this the first day, then plan on laying down the new floor the second day. Laminate wood, hardwood and new carpeting are fairly simple to put down. Invite a few friends over to help, and spring for lunch to sweeten the deal.

Are you planning on having custom closetsinstalled? If so, you might want to go through the items in your closets ahead of time. Plan on spending a couple of hours in each closet so that you can remove each item that doesn’t belong. Once you have a large pile of clothing and accessories to take to the thrift shop, get in the car and actually do it. Don’t allow belongings that you will never use again to clutter up any other area of your home or car. If you want to paint the closets before having your organization system installed, do that at this time as well; just be sure to leave enough time for the paint to fully dry before the professionals come in to install your custom closets.

Rearrange the furniture

This might only take a couple of hours, depending on how many rooms you need to switch around. Sometimes it occurs to us that there is a better way to use the space that we have. In this case, it makes sense to move furniture and other items around. The time-consuming part is if things like cables need to be relocated, or if larger furniture needs to be taken apart and reassembled in the new room in order to fit through the doorways. These tasks are easy to put off, but if you want them accomplished at some point, then you might as well do it on a long weekend. Knock out the project in a day and then spend the next two days relaxing and recuperating (and enjoying your newly placed furniture)!

Whether it’s Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day or another long weekend, taking the opportunity to get some of these home organization or home improvement jobs out of the way gets them done without taking up all of your time off. Plan your time wisely and you can enjoy productivity as well as relaxation on your next long weekend.
