3 Things Every Custom Garage Should Have

George Chowanec • Mar 20, 2015

If you have a garage, then there are certain things you should have in order to make the most of the space. Today’s garages are much more than just a place to park the car; nowadays garages are used for all types of storage, DIY projects and sometimes even as a hobby area or man cave. If you aren't ready yet for the full-blown garage renovation project, here are 3 things that you should have in your garage so that the space is functioning efficiently:

1. Wall Storage

Even if your garage is relatively large, you should still try to have as much horizontal space as possible. Since you probably aren’t decorating your garage walls with valuable artwork or family photographs, you should line them with whatever type of wall storage you find most helpful. Many homeowners choose to install garage cabinetsagainst one wall, while other homeowners choose various types of tool and sports equipment storage racks.

2. Specific Tools

You probably have a toolbox filled with the basic tools needed around your house (screwdrivers, hammers, etc.). However, the next time you’re in the hardware store, you might consider adding to your collection if you seem to be lacking anything. A useful tool to have is a thread restorer for when you end up with stripped bolts. Make sure you also have a measuring tape (preferably one that retracts on its own) along with a flashlight and extra batteries.

3. Cleaning Supplies and Rags

If there’s one thing that most garage projects have in common, it’s that they tend to get messy. Whether you’re changing your oil, wiping down your dashboard or cleaning up spilled paint, not having cleaning supplies and rags handy will lead to frustration. You could buy a few packages of rags at your local automotive store or you could even use old t-shirts (just remember to throw them away when you’re done; don’t try to launder anything with chemicals or oil on it.)

By making sure you have these useful items in your garage, you'll soon find the room is a cleaner, more organized and more useful place to spend your time. If your garage space is used more efficiently, then you might also find that you’re able to more easily park your car, or take on more projects because you now have the right tools available.
