George Chowanec • Jan 14, 2016

Ironically, when it comes to cleaning and organizing the home, the laundry roomis often overlooked since it is usually the place to keep all the cleaning equipment and pile(s) of dirty clothes. However, as boring as laundry tasks get, it still makes sense to keep the area that has been designed for cleaning, neat and organized.

8 Easy Tips For Organizing Your Laundry

In the end it’s all about saving time when it comes to keeping organized. Finding what works and sticking to it. So here are 8 easy things you can do that will save you time and effort in managing your laundry tasks, helping you to keep it clean and well organized all year round. Here at All About Closets in New Jersey, we specialize in installing laundry room organizers to make your weekly chores much easier.

Take The Lids Off Your Hampers

Yes why not make it super easy to put dirty clothes where they belong. This means you can toss things into your hamper even in a hurry without having to be next to it to lift the lid. Makes sense for a quick dirty laundry getaway hurl.

Let Your Children Help You

If you have young children this is the the best way for them to learn from early on. Get them involved in every step, from carrying the dirty clothes to the laundry room, putting them into the washer and dryer, and even if their best attempts fail – helping with folding and putting them away. And as we all know, it may not carry through into their teenage years, but at least when they do leave home they will have the fundamentals in place to take care of themselves.

Do Your Laundry On Specific Days

Deploy this rule or try doing a load each evening – whichever works best for you. However you choose to do this make your regular days into your laundry days. It will also help with planning what you wear and to have available specific items when you need them for different activities.

Calendar Planner

Have A Hamper In Each Room

This includes each bedroom that is used as well as the bathroom. However, if you have enough room, then put all your hampers in the laundry room together. Labelling your hampers according to wash loads is one of the most efficient ways to organize your laundry – E.g: whites, colors, linen, towels etc.  Have each person in your family sort their clothes into the hampers accordingly. This is a great time saver!

Keep A Basket For Lost Socks

We’ve all shared the “missing sock” experience. Many speculate they enter a mysterious dimension through the washing machine, never to return. Although there have been many reported sightings of their return, very few seem to make it back to their counterparts. The best way to help this is to have a basket for lost socks in our laundry – that way if you come across any that don’t have matches, you can put them in there. Each time you find any solo socks, go back to the basket and see if it’s match is there. This works a treat and you will find you will have at lot less missing socks at the end of every month by doing this.

Custom Laundry Room Upper Cabinets

Keep A Backup Of Laundry Cleaners

By keeping a back-up of things like laundry detergent, softener and stain remover, when you use the last of one item mid-wash you can always count on having another in the cabinet  to continue on with.  When you open the back-up be sure to add it to your grocery list. Since laundry items are often expensive, stock up when they are on sale whenever possible .

Put Up A Stain Remover Chart

Google one and print it out. Putting up a good stain remover chart is going to save you a great deal of time trying to figure out what methods actually work and don’t work to remove stains. Not all  generic stain removers work for all types of stains, despite what the packaging might say. So do yourself a favor and get a chart that can help you deal with any stain that comes your way, ensuring a longer life for you favorite clothing items.

Have A Mending Basket

If you have something that needs mending or repair – don’t despair. Designate a small basket in your laundry for these items.  If you are savvy with a needle and thread you can mend them yourself once a week whilst watching tv or listening to an audiobook. Or if mending is not your thing, then drop them off at the local seamstress either weekly or monthly – whatever suits, and presto –  you can keep wearing those cherished pieces.
